Daily Activitiesgroup

At Camp
Young people arrive with their supervisors and after an initial orientation session and a meal they take part in various team building and sporting activities. The evening is then kept free for the groups to socialise and interact with each other and is concluded with a group supper.

Throughout the course all activities and challenges promote teamwork. Group is divided into smaller sub groups who have to work together throughout. New friendships and community links are formed and bridges can be built between community groups.games

Specific Team building activities include:-

• Park Orienteering Exercise
• Dry Assault Course
• Inter group rounders game
• Tug of Warbush tucker

Bush Tucker Trail

This is one of the most popular activitiesattendees havethechance to try foodsfrom each food group. Writtenexercises back up the “Healthy Living” message that Action Camp is trying to promote.

Fair Trade Exercise
Weather permitting this exercise takes place on the Tenby south beach. After a number of team building activities the attendees are introduced to the practical implications of “Fair Trade” and how the West interacts with third world producers. The lessons are taught in an interactive way backed up with written exercises to reinforce the message.

Active Citizenship Exercise
The attendees get the opportunity to learn about the benefits of active citizenship, how it can help them and their communities. Specialist tutors worked with the attendees on typical community projects giving real “hands on” experience. A written exercise promoted discussion on the benefits for the individual and the community and again reinforced the practical work.

Food Miles Exercise - food miles
Financial Planning
A popular exercise where the attendees are challenged to prepare a meal for their group on a tight budget using the least amount of food miles possible. Attendees have to explore the retail outlets of Tenby using the local shops to purchase their raw ingredients. Great imagination and pride was displayed in the preparation and consumption of the meals with many important topics being covered including:
• Working as a team
• Supporting and sustaining the local economy
• Budgeting skills
• How food miles can impact on the environment
• Cooking skills
Written exercises help to reinforce the messages taught

The ASDAN Challenges take place over the three days. This involves participation in interactive activities designed to highlight the environmental issues facing the planet, and provides the young people with the knowledge to start making a real difference back in their homes and communities. The completion of these modules provide the young people with an ASDAN Short Course Award.

asdanASDAN Short Course Awards provide a range of programmes to facilitate accreditation of young people's activities in the areas of PSHE and Citizenship, work-related learning, community volunteering, economic wellbeing, sports and fitness, enterprise, expressive arts, relationships education, outdoor and residential experiences, peer mentoring and international links.

This Short Course is a 30 hour programme, it is multi-level, which means that completion of 'Personal Challenges' together with skills development according to individual ability are the requirements, rather than the attainment of any particular level. It can be used as a standalone award or as a progression route into the Main ASDAN Awards or into qualifications such as CoPE or Wider Key Skills. The award counts as half of the curriculum requirements of the Certificate of Personal Effectiveness (CoPE), which is worth a full GCSE.

The attendees have approximately three hours of free time each day during which time the full facilities of the holiday complex are available whilst many of the groups decide to explore Tenby town.

Evening entertainment is available to all attendees consisting of the complex’s full facilities:
• Live music
• Karaoke
• Party dances
• Snooker/pool
• Bowling

The camp is manned throughout the evening and many attendees choose to spend time with each other and new friends in the communal tent areas.

Tylerstown Communities First
“Tylorstown Communities First took eleven young people to Action Camp 2009, and all the young people attending had a great time together. They had the opportunity to try lots of environmentally themed activities in a safe and fun environment, outside of their normal community. They gained a great deal from the experience and forged new friendships with other young people from different walks of life.”

Action Camp is an exciting and innovative project There is no better way of regenerating communities than investing in young people, which is what Action Camp is all about. We would have no hesitation in recommending Action Camp to any other partnership and will certainly be looking to include it in our summer program next year
Keith Jenkins
Communities First Coordinator

Penygraig Communities First
“Overall the whole experience was very good. The two most successful elements, for the children, were the shopping & the cooking and mixing with children from other areas. Many of the group had never shopped or cooked for themselves before and found this particularly exciting. Bridges have certainly been built between communities, thank you RCT Homes” Tammy ‘Llewellyn
Communities First Support Worker

Glyncoch Communities First
"We have been coming to Action Camp for three years now and have seen it grow from strength to strength. I would have no hesitation in recommending it to any Communities First Partnership or Youth Group thinking of organising a residential. It is both educational and enjoyable meeting many or out action plan targets"
Jenny O'Hara Jakeaway,
Communities First Coordinator

Darran Las Communities First
RCT Homes deserve much credit thanks to them our young people had an absolutely brilliant time. I was shocked, surprised & over the moon at how much the kids had absorbed about ESDGC. Some of our kids are notoriously difficult to engage so it was wonderful to see them so excited about Action Camp….”
Leanna Thomas
Community First Coordinator

“The great thing about Action Camp is its not just educational – it’s fun as well. For some of the young people we work with this was the only holiday they had. We will certainly be returning next year”
Hywel Williams –

“Some of the young people who attended Action Camp had never seen the sea before. It ws very rewarding watching them experience the beach activities”

Abertillery Communities First
“This was the first time we had been to Action Camp, we came with over 40 young people and have thoroughly enjoyed it, the whole point of the course was to introduce ESDGC. We have seen a great improvement in the young people during the time we have been here and hope we get the opportunity to attend again”

“The staff and young people have really enjoyed Action Camp, everybody worked well as a team. The camp was well organised with robust systems in place making us feel very safe at all times.
